Congrats to Matt! He passed his comps!

Yeah! My smuggly super duper husband passed his Ph.D. comprehensive exams and is now ABD!!!! This is a huge success! Unluckily, Matt is off at the 4Cs conference in Chigago and so he and I can't celebrate this, so this blog post is my small way of toasting him in the meantime!

Weeeeeeeeeeee!!
Have I ever bored you with my whiny story about how I almost got distinctions on my comps (I got two votes for distinction) but didn't officially get a high pass because they'd changed the rules? If I haven't, remind me to tell you; or, don't remind me, if you choose NOT to be insanely bored.

what happened? how did they change the rules?

Wow, you asked for it! :-)
No... I'll keep it short. Basically, I was bitter because Mark had taken the comps the year before me and passed with distinction on every section, which was easier to do (though he was the only person who pulled it off) because they only had one reader per section (three sections). If that reader voted for distinction, you got the distinction. The next year, they changed the rules so that all sections had TWO readers each. They had to vote unanimously to give you distinction. So, two of my readers, on two different sections, voted to give me a high pass, but the other reader of each section voted for just a Pass. With the lack of unaninimity, I just got a regular Pass. I complained about this constantly, and one day was complaining about it in a coffee shop in SF. Some random stranger at a nearby table, who overheard me going on, interrupted and said, "Get over it! You didn't get the distinction, so what!" It was pretty funny.
